Cob

Cob has been used for centuries as a strong building material for houses. Mix water, sand, clay, earth, manure and hay into a plastic, bread dough like consistency and it becomes a raw sculpting material. These beginning prototype cob sails, using the materials of Shelburne Farms, defy what a sail represents. Sail brings to mind lightness, air, flexibility, mobility. These sails are earth bound, raw, rough and primitive.
